Cricket Highlights, 02 April: SA vs PAK (1st ODI), WI vs SL (2nd Test-Day 5)

The 1st ODI of the series between Pakistan & South Africa and the 5th day of the 2nd Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka took place yesterday. Let’s have a look to know about the exciting moments of the games.

SA vs PAK (1st ODI)

Chasing South Africa’s 273 for 6, Pakistan won by 3 wickets. They needed 3 runs in the last over & the visitors used all 6 balls to make that runs.

South Africa lost the toss and elected to bat first. They scored 273 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 50 overs. Rassie van der Dussen scored 123 runs. Apart from that, Markram scored 19, Quinton de Kock scored 20 and David Miller scored 50 runs for the team. For Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf took 2 wickets each.

Batting in reply, Pakistan ensured victory in the thriller of the last ball. The Pakistani Captain Babar Azam picked up the 13th century of his ODI career, playing the 76th innings of his career. No other batsman has scored 13 centuries in so few innings before. He was dismissed for 103 runs. Imam-ul-Haq scored 70 runs. Mohammad Rizwan (40) and Shadab Khan (33) contributed to the team’s victory. Anrich Nortje (4-51, 10 overs) was the highest wicket-taker for South Africa. However, his bowling prowess couldn’t save the Proteas. 

Pakistan won the match and went ahead 1-0 in the three-match ODI series. The second ODI of the series will be played tomorrow at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

WI vs SL (2nd Test – Day 5)

In Antigua, the visiting team Sri Lanka started the fifth day’s game with 29 runs for no loss & the target for them was 377 runs. Sri Lanka managed to draw the match with the firmness of Dimuth Karunaratne and Oshada Fernando. The two have shown extreme patience. Karunaratne scored 75 off 176 balls playing for 244 minutes while Fernando was unbeaten on 66 off 119 balls playing for 161 minutes.

Karunaratne-Thirimanne’s 101 in the opening pair laid the foundation for the Lankans’ to draw the match. In the third over, Thirimanne survived on his personal 17 runs. Joshua Da Silva could not take the catch of him. Later, the two batted defensively surviving on the wicket.

In the end, Dinesh Chandimal gave great facilitation to Fernando. Despite being unbeaten on 10 runs, the important thing was that he played 66 balls sticking on the wicket for 82 minutes. Opener Lahiru Thirimanne also showed great patience. He scored 39 off 114 balls playing for 165 minutes. Alzarri Joseph and Kyle Mayers took 1 wicket each for West Indies.

Like the first Test match, the last Test match is also drawn and the series is drawn between the host West Indies and the visiting Sri Lanka. After losing 2-1 in the T20I series, the visitors also lost 3-0 in the ODI series.
