In international cricket, the South African cricket team is now touring the West Indies for Test and T20I bilateral series. The tour is set to begin with the first Test on June 10 at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium (St. Lucia). The tour includes 2 Test matches and 5 T20I matches. The second and final Test match of the series will be played at the same venue from June 18 to June 22.
West Indies and South Africa have met in a total of 28 Test matches since 1991. South Africa has won 18 matches of them and West Indies has got triumph on 3 and 7 matches were drawn. The last time the two teams met was in December 2014, in a Test series in South Africa. West Indies lost 2-0 to the hosts in that 3-match series. And the Proteas won 2 matches and one match was drawn. South Africa played their last 2-match Test series against hosts Pakistan, where the Proteas were whitewashed against Pakistan.
West Indies drew their last two matches in the Test series against visiting Sri Lanka. Earlier, they whitewashed the Tigers in a 2-match Test series against host Bangladesh. However, West Indies are not statistically bad on their soil. In the last 3 Test series held on home soil, they lost only against India. They drew one of the other two and won one.
So, while South Africa is ahead in terms of statistics, the success of the latest Test series at home and abroad has given the West Indies players a sense of confidence. Moreover, this time the Caribbeans play on home soil. They will try their best to make the results of the series on their side.
The West Indies are 6th and South Africa is 7th in the ICC Test rankings. So, both teams will have to work hard in this series to build a stronger position in the points table.
