The Bangladesh cricket team is now touring New Zealand for ODI and T20 bilateral series in international cricket. The tour is set to begin with the first ODI tomorrow (March 20) at the University Oval (Dunedin). This tour features 3 ODIs and 3 T20I matches. The 2nd and 3rd ODI matches of the series will be played on 23rd and 26th March respectively. Later, the T20 series will be held from March 28 to April 1.
This is going to be New Zealand’s first ODI since March 2020. Even though a 3-match ODI series against Australia was scheduled for March 2020, New Zealand could play only one match due to the Corona epidemic. The host Australia defeated the visiting New Zealand in that match. After that, New Zealand could not play any more ODIs for almost a long year.
The players had to stay in quarantine for the first two weeks after landing in New Zealand. They had to stay in their respective hotel rooms for the first seven days. The Bangladesh team then spent their time on a training camp in Queenstown last week. This training camp was added after the initial itinerary was changed.
Bangladesh could never beat New Zealand in New Zealand. On the other hand, Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson are not available for the Kiwis in the first match because of injuries. So this time there is a big opportunity for Bangladesh to get a good start to the series & win it by defeating New Zealand on their soil.
New Zealand has won 25 matches and Bangladesh has won 10 matches and 1 match has been abandoned amid 36 of the ODIs played between them. The two teams last met in the 9th match of the group stage of the last World Cup that was held in 2019. New Zealand won that match by 2 wickets. Bangladesh also lost to New Zealand in the last ODI series in February 2019, which was the last series played between them. They faced off for 3 matches in the series. The Black Caps won all 3 matches.
Bangladesh won their last three ODIs of the 3-match ODI series by defeating the visiting West Indies (3-0). On the other hand, the New Zealand team is mature enough not to give up on their soil. After winning the last ODI series, the Bangladesh team players have an abundance of confidence even though New Zealand is ahead in terms of statistics. Moreover, this time the Kiwis are going to play on home soil. They must try their best to make the series memorable.
New Zealand is ranked 3rd and Bangladesh is ranked 7th in the ICC ODI rankings. So to create a strong position in the points table, Bangladesh has to work hard in this series.
